  1. I live in a small rural town and we have a local hotel with an arena that hosts a ton of horse related events as well as having the normal travelers that check in. They have help yourself bookshelves in the lobby and I donate there.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions. I have been in the habit of taking my books once read to St. Vincent de Pauls. They are only a couple of blocks away, so very convenient. (That’s where I also buy a lot of our books). It saves a bundle and am happy to see someone else will get to read when we’re done.

  2. I also like to donate to teachers for their classrooms.

  3. I’m the chair of our library committee in our senior residence. We have limited shelf space in our library, so we are very picky about what we allow in. Don’t just consider us a dumping ground for all your old books. We only want recent books in good condition, primarily fiction and biography.

Do not give senior centers your books in poor condition with tiny print. Large print books are like gold to them. Do pass them along.

  4. I donate and volunteer for our local Friends of the Library. Most cities with a public Library has this organization. It’s a non-profit and all proceeds go to support the Library by purchasing books, furniture or other goods, or by helping fund Library programs. All books are donated and everyone is a volunteer.

Prisons generally only accept books sent directly from the publisher. To easy to smuggle prohibited objects in books from individuals. maybe check your facts (read a book?) before you broadcast your ignorance.

    1. I wasn’t suggesting people send them directly, which is why I listed 2 organizations that do this work as they follow the restrictions and guidelines. Have a great day!

I love this post! I donate my used books to a local used book store – they give you store credit, and any books they don’t take, they will donate to a local women’s prison on our behalf! It’s a win-win for me every day 🙂

  7. Love this list. I’ve been struggling with how to downsize my library. My alma mater has agreed to take a sizable number. Don’t forget to consider them. And yes, I’m sure I’ve unloaded a couple hundred to Little Free Library. They go like hotcakes. Someone in my neighborhood shares my literary taste. I love getting my books into the hands of new readers. Thanks for this.
