  1. Simon Brand says:

Very apt for me. I realise more and more that our interior and exterior are often synergistic and reflective it seems.

  2. I was unaware of the concept of hygge when I decluttered and redecorated my home. I knew I wanted simple and I knew I wanted color. I also knew that I wanted clean, straight lines. I chose mustard as the pop of color layered over neutrals in each room. It’s a small apartment and it’s a bit chopped up. I wanted to create cohesiveness so that each room had its own stamp while exuding my vision throughout.

I’m not a minimalist and don’t aspire to be. I do, however, like clear spaces, what I call white space like poetry – places free of trappings. It’s hard for me to reconcile “cozy’ with that. The word cozy translates to clutter for me. Fluffy pillows and blankets slung on sofa and chairs, throw rugs, family photos in mishmash frames on every surface. All is the antithesis of my style. Yet, my home is warm and inviting. My guests are comfortable, enjoy spending time. When the Xfinity technician came last week to repair my internet connection, he walked in the door, looked around the living room and said, “Will you adopt me? All I need are three meals.” Obviously he was charmed and he charmed me.

I know my home is comfortable. I like being in it and I like hosting. But hygge? Not really. I chose the coolness of a linen sofa over the softness of velvet. That choice is reflected throughout.
