5. Create boundaries with technology

If someone asked you what sucks up more of your time than you’d like, many people would answer their phones. If they don’t it may because they are unaware of how much time they are spending on it.

7. Decide to forgive

This is one of the more challenging proven ways to improve your life immediately. Anger and bitterness can run deep and may not be easy to let go of.

The anger may be justified, but choosing to forgive is for your own health and well-being. When you forgive, it lowers your blood pressure and anxiety and increases your immune system and self-esteem.

8. Start a hobby

Life gets busy and before you know it you can get caught up in it and forget some of the things you once loved. As people get older, many drop their hobbies. Other priorities take over and may not get picked back up.

10. Start a gratitude habit

I’ve heard from many different sources and also myself experienced that when you start the habit of writing down that you’re grateful for, it radically changes your perspective.

Regardless of the circumstances in life, there is always gratitude to be found when one sets their mind to look for it. When you choose to focus on the positive and what you already have, you’ll be much happier.

Your gratitude habit can be as simple as writing down 3 things you are thankful for each day. This one of the ways to improve your life immediately will have a great impact.

11. Consider the company you keep

Have you heard the quote that ‘you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with’? Jim Rohn was onto something with that.

We are greatly impacted by the people we associate with. Darren Hardy wrote in the Compound Effect that the people you most commonly spend time with influence as much as 95 percent of your success or failure in life.

Choose people that challenge you and inspire you to be a better person. Think of who you admire and why. As much as you are able, spend more time with the people you want to be like and less time with those you don’t.

12. Challenge your expectations

In life, we sometimes accept the way things are simply because we are used to them. We think we have to keep doing the same things with the same people the same way because it’s expected.

When your life has been built on other people’s expectations of you, it’s likely that you don’t end up feeling content or satisfied. You need to get to the heart of what matters most to you.

Challenge those expectations. Find your own way.

“Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path, and leave a trail.” -Emerson

If you are by nature a people pleaser, you can decide to stop. It will be an added challenge, but through doing enough inner work and determination it can be done.

13. Get more rest

We live in a fast-paced world where the need for rest appears to be more a sign of weakness than a biological necessity. Instead of holding it with the high value that we should, we push it aside for later when things ‘calm down’.

The problem is, it never does. We’ve lost the practice of resting one day per week and we’ve ignored all the signs of not resting enough and instead just drink another cup of coffee.

You can choose to have a more balanced and healthy life even if it doesn’t seem to be the norm. Your body will thank you as you choose to get a healthy amount of sleep and incorporate rest into your daily and weekly routines.

14. Let go of something

Clutter can hold you back and leave you feeling burdened without you even realizing it is happening. It’s when you decide to let go of things that you see how they’d been negatively impacting your life.

Statistics on clutter show that many people have too much stuff. You can start decluttering with some simple and easy projects. Often those motivate you to declutter further and then you can systematically declutter your home.

Clutter can also appear in the form of a very busy schedule. As mentioned previously, it also looks like emotional clutter too. Notice where clutter is showing up in your life, and start the process of letting it go.

15. Do something nice for someone else

It’s easy and common to get caught up in the details of your life. However, when you’re completely focused on yourself, it leads to a lack of empathy and understanding of others.

Instead, try stepping outside your comfort zone and looking for how you can do something for someone else. As you seek to do kindness for others, you’ll find that you benefit too. It feels good to help others.

There are many ideas for acts of kindness to choose from. You can do some research or come up with ideas of your own. Start improving your day by adding some joy to someone else’s.

    1. The idea about stepping back and assessing my own situation “from the outside, in” was great. I was vaguely aware of areas in which I fly on auto-pilot. But listing specifics will hopefully get me out of some engrained ways of thinking and acting and into new territory. Thanks.
