  1. One way we’re recession-proofing our food bill: our grocery store holds one customer appreciation day every month, where we save 15 per cent on everything we buy. We keep a running list of items we don’t need right away, to purchase on the sale day.

  2. I love and use the idea of allocating savings to different goals. My bank offers the ability to put money in “buckets”, so it’s easy to see how much has been set aside for travel, education, renovations and unexpected/emergency costs, for example. Not only does it keep me from spending money intended elsewhere, it removes the guilt I felt of using our savings for its intended purpose.
