Inside: Recognizing these seven habits that are keeping you stuck in life is the first step to making a positive change.
Do you feel like you aren’t making the progress you’d like towards your goals?
Your habits might be holding you back.
Habits are things that we do regularly – so often, we don’t even think about them. Because of this, it requires additional effort to step back and evaluate what’s hindering our progress toward our goals.
There are a number of habits that can keep us stuck in life – including a few habits that, at first glance, seem like they might be a positive influence on our ability to get things done.
If you’re ready to shake things up and start taking meaningful steps toward your goals, it’s time for a little self-reflection. Here are a handful of habits that might be doing you more harm than good.
7 Habits That Are Keeping You Stuck in Life
Here are seven habits that keep people stuck in life. Identifying these behaviors is the first step to overcoming them.
1. Procrastinating.
This one might feel a little obvious, but it’s an important one. It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t procrastinate once in a while. And because it’s such a common thing to do, it’s easy to gloss over it when trying to figure out why you’re feeling stuck.
But pursuing your goals and achieving your ambitions requires forward progress. And if you’re endlessly putting off the tasks that’ll help you get there, you aren’t going to see much improvement.
Stopping procrastination can be a hard habit to break, but be intentional about how you check off items on your to-do list. If you can do something now, don’t put it off until later unless you have a compelling reason to do it.
2. Perfectionism.
Many of us want to hold ourselves to the highest standard – which is something to be admired. But focusing on doing everything perfectly can hinder our ability to grow and achieve our goals. Instead, it sets us up for failure.
Pursuing perfection is a quick way to find yourself stuck, unmotivated, and stressed out. Achieving perfection 100% of the time is not possible. Instead, embrace the saying “progress, not perfection.”
You can celebrate your achievements even when they aren’t perfect and carry that momentum forward to make additional progress – without dwelling on what you should’ve done differently.
Shift your perspective and come to terms with “good enough“. You’ll be surprised to see how much of a difference it makes in your ability to do great things.
3. Beating yourself up over your mistakes.
We all make mistakes – it’s an unavoidable part of life. But if you fall into the trap of dwelling on those mistakes and ruminating on things you can no longer change, you aren’t helping yourself grow.
Endlessly beating yourself up over your mistakes can cause you to get stuck in a cycle of negativity. It damages your self-confidence, perpetuates negative self-talk, and ultimately leads to indecision and inaction when faced with another decision or challenge.
Instead, it’s important to give yourself grace. Do what you can to fix whatever went wrong.
Spend a little time reflecting on what happened and what you might be able to do in the future to avoid making the same mistake. Then, move on.
4. Being overly optimistic.
Optimism is widely viewed as a positive thing – and it is. Having a positive outlook and giving people the benefit of the doubt is generally something that works in our favor.
However, being overly optimistic can make it difficult to see the reality of a situation, which doesn’t always help us out.
Sometimes, bad things happen. Sometimes we don’t succeed. And sometimes we make bad decisions. Other times we make big mistakes.
And being able to acknowledge and learn from those experiences is critical to growing as a person and making progress.
5. Having too many goals and priorities.
It’s important to clearly define your priorities and goals. When you know what’s most important to you, you can focus your energy, cut out the noise, and take steps to make meaningful progress.
When everything is a priority, it’s easy to get distracted and overwhelmed. Your attention is pulled in too many different directions, and you can’t focus on moving the needle on the things that matter most.
Instead, you find yourself spending too much time on mindless habits rather than more important work – leaving you stuck.
6. Addiction.
Addiction is one of the biggest barriers to making progress in life, and it takes many forms. Many of us think about addictions in terms of substances like alcohol, but there are so many other traps that we can fall into.
You can be addicted to social media or watching television. There are shopping addictions, exercise addictions, food addictions, and more.
But many who struggle with addiction fail to see their addiction for what it is – a problem. If you’re struggling with addiction, it’s often all-consuming.
You don’t have time or space to focus your energy on bigger, more important things because your addiction is the most important thing.
Fortunately, help is available to those who struggle with addiction. Find a therapist and a support system to help you work through it. With a lot of effort, commitment, and dedication change is possible.
7. Doing too much research.
Now, this one might come as a bit of a surprise – but too much information can be a bad thing.
With the internet at our fingertips, we can go down endless rabbit holes on virtually anything.
Whether you’re trying to tackle a home repair project, figure out the best program for your Master’s degree, or choose a destination for your next vacation, you can spend hours – or days – simply taking in information.
While it’s certainly worthwhile to do some research when making decisions or planning your next course of action, too much information can be a detriment. It can lead to analysis paralysis – where you feel overwhelmed to the point of being incapable of making a decision.
And if you’re in the habit of endlessly researching everything, chances are you aren’t making too much progress on anything. Overthinking can waste your time and keep you feeling stuck.
