How to Start Organizing a Messy House

Now, you don’t have to pick up a home organizing book to begin your home organization journey. Instead, you can start any time.

It’s as simple as throwing away a single piece of trash, donating an item you no longer need or recycling something that simply has no place in your home anymore.

Getting started is often the biggest and scariest step in anything we do. Once you get past that initial challenge, you’ll be surprised to see just how much of a difference you can make.

So roll up your sleeves, pull back your hair, and get ready to get your home organized – by reading a good book.

How Do You Keep a Messy House Under Control?

Keeping your messy house under control can be a challenge – but I promise, you can do it!

The first thing you have to do is get your home to a good, organized state. And once it’s there? You need to take steps to keep it there and prevent things from spiraling out of control.

One way you can keep your messy house under control is to implement better habits. By embracing habits that help you stay organized, you’ll be more easily able to keep your house in order. These habits could include:

  • Spending 15 minutes tidying up every evening before you watch your favorite show.
  • Wash your dishes and clean the kitchen while you’re cooking to get ahead of the mess.
  • Make sure your bedroom floor is clutter-free every morning before you leave for work.

Another way you can keep your messy house under control is to buy things to help you stay organized. Bins, baskets, shelves, and other storage spaces to stow your stuff can be useful.

However, only after you have thoroughly decluttered your things. The focus needs to be on decluttering first. Then, and only then, comes the organizational solutions.

If everything has a home, it’s much easier to put things away so that they don’t become clutter.

What is the First Step to Becoming More Organized?

The first step to becoming more organized is to shift your mindset.

You have to want to get organized. Otherwise, you’re going to be fighting a losing battle. It’s hard to motivate yourself to do something – in this case, keep your home clutter-free and organized – when you don’t even really care about the outcome.

If you have the desire and commitment to have an organized home, it’ll be much easier to build the good habits you need to keep it clean and tidy.

If you’re struggling to shift your mindset or aren’t sure how to make it happen, the books I’m about to share could be a great starting point.

  1. I agree with you that decluttering is the first step and very important! When it comes to organization, I’ve always wondered what you do with the rice krispies left in the box that won’t quite fit in the cereal decanter?

    1. That’s a great question, Sharon, and part of why I don’t decant. It seems like a lot of extra effort and while it looks nice, it doesn’t seem super practical to me.

  2. I have a problem with when I clean I take all the unwanted items downstairs to the basement so now I just have a path down there and really need to declutter and organize that area a lot of the things are things I think I still need help how do I get started

    1. Becky-I have found it helpful to focus on decluttering one small area at a time and to complete it before moving on to another one. And by complete it I mean get the unwanted items out of your house ASAP rather than continuing to store them in a different part of your home. I hope that helps!
