  1. I think I have used all of the habits to try not to buy too much. Except for the budgeting. My husband wasn’t into that in our season of like. My Word of the Year is ENOUGH. Trying to remind myself that I have ENOUGH. Really, more than enough. It worked well for the beginning of the year, but starting in Oct, I found myself shopping foolishly again. I plan to try to do the Low Spend/No Spend in January again. Thank you for the reminders.

    1. all make sense and very helpful practically but the following are a must to do
      gratitude
      finding joy outside shoppping
      mindful shopping
      thankyou for reminding and motivating

    2. The whole economy is based on wanting more and better and ads too often are about getting over on the other guy to get it.

      1. I will begin by defining what is enough and look at things from the perspective of: what do I have already rather than what is missing.
        Excellent ideas Julianna.

  2. I’m very lucky, advertising has little effect on me (except maybe as a deterrent), I simply don’t notice it; and I’ve never believed in replacing stuff until the old one is useless. I also hate shopping, avoiding consumerism is easy for me, except for fresh food and clothing where well priced stock in hand is handy to have. I waste nothing, everything is totally consumed.

  3. My favorite of these habits is finding joy outside of shopping.
I have always been an avid reader, but with my new YouTube habit added to Netflix, I realize I have read only one book in the past year! I will get back to reading and having that take up my time…library books are free.
I also hope to get back my lost brain cells (lol).

  4. I rarely buy retail, with the exception of food. Haven’t been to the mall in 5 years. I buy second hand and haunt the thrift shops.

  5. Advertising does not influence me. I have a strong sense of my needs & choices. I am good at living very simply & cheaply! Long, long ago I stepped away from “shopping”. It was truly liberating. I enjoy using the products I already own. I spend my time in art galleries, museums, nature & concert halls. Many of these events are also free! I read,
walk & reflect. The sense of freedom experienced is incredibly addictive.

  6. I’m looking at downsizing my house. It is overwhelming deciding what to keep and what to donate. I may be able to sell some things. I think I will start with decluttering my beauty products and organize them so that I don’t waste money.

  7. what happened to doing things by hand and taking pride in it, we all have a knife and hand shredder but everyone wants the electric food processer, salad shooter, mandoline, and don’t get me started on a Keurig that just produces tons, like 40 thousand tons of waste from the k-cups a year. Instead go to a soup kitchen or shelter to volunteer and see what they don’t have, buy for the homeless, build homes for the homeless stop being selfish greedy empty headed idiots and be mindful of what is going on in your communities and environment, see the truth, live the truth, we all have to much except our fellow human being that has nothing, and how would you feel if you ever fell into it yourself, we are all one paycheck away from having nothing, so be responsible and think before you buy.

  8. Thanks for the great ideas! They are especially helpful as we head into the holidays. Gratitude is essential to a joyful life!

  9. You have motivated me to sort and purge extra clothing. I realize I don’t need so many clothes since retirement, and I usually reach for the same things anyway.
