So overwhelming is the mess I’ve created, I needed a plan and scanned numerous articles, but found this one to be the best! Thank you. Armed with your simple, explicit tips…….I’m headed out there now!

Thank you for the list. I have made cleaning, organizing and remodeling our garage a priority. I will be using the list you provide as a foundation to start the task. I am disabled and it will require more time, but it will be done. When finished, our garage will be one of the areas of our home that is a key to our functional living.
It will be more than a “catch all” place. It will be a center of activity for many of the objectives that we will seek to accomolish. The garage is one of our most visited rooms when working on the home, engaging in maintenance, and preparing for activities of leisure. I know your ideals will help me to accomplish the work and enjoy the fruit of our labour. We bought our home; why not create each area the best way to make full use of it. Thank you again.

We have 20 years of accumulated stuff (mostly about 100 boxes of professional paperwork and various junk) in our barn-garage. Our goal is to be able to park at least one car in it by the time we are 80, i.e. within 2 years. So I guess that means 10 years of stuff per year to sort through and declutter. One box to sort per week x 50 weeks per year (two weeks off) = 50 boxes decluttered per year – that should do it!

Is this how you wish to spend your 78th and 79th year here?
Can you have the papers recycled in one fell swoop and use your time doing things you might enjoy doing more? (I am 80 and have things for eight decades – it is easier to say – haven’t opened you in 30 years – why now? (I was a teacher – retired in 1998.) Daughters (49, 47, 46) do not want stuff that dates back to forever and doesn’t fit their lifestyles – never will.) Do the thank you, time to say good-bye ritual and enjoy life!

  4. Hmmm. . .I have mixed feelings about dumping a box without opening it.
I have a friend who hired a company to sort through her mother’s long-time hoarded items, and she made $15K by selling doll collections.
When I purged boxes full of family photos, I found items that I could put to use, as well as lost legal papers. Ultimately, do what’s best for your own psyche, and have fun.
