  1. Some time ago I decided to stop checking in to a social media site. I found it had gotten to be so routine and mundane–not finding members to be that engaging. Instead of saying repeat things every day, “Good morning” etc. I have time to quietly enjoy my morning coffee and enjoy my husband before he leaves for work. It is amazing how much time I have freed for myself, and being retired, can get right into my morning routine without interruptions. Of course, ‘to each his/ her own,’ but this is what works for me. Frequently, I have time to prep our dinner and feel I have used my time wisely and gotten the day off to a good start. (Thank you Julianna for another great article!)

  2. This blog message fell into my laptop right on time. Today I submitted paperwork for retirement. April 4th is my last as a paid worker. Finally I get to live my childhood dream of dedicating myself to what I love – writing. This afternoon, after celebrating with haircut, manicure, pedicure, and caffeinated/whole milk latte, I thought about how to structure my day.

I threw a question out on Facebook. A writer, Lauren, messaged me offering free membership to the DC Writers Room. It provides a private, quiet space to write, 24/7. All members are accomplished writers, all needing space away from home to work. I was a member pre-Covid, but in time couldn’t afford it so had to end my membership. Lauren and I bonded just last week over her new book about South Africa. I’d been there and had done a ton of advocacy work during apartheid, so we shared a lot of history. She’s an attorney who had spent time there as well. She saw my post, sent me a private message, and voila. Half my structure problem is solved.

But yes, the morning rituals set the tone for the day so I’m happy that you published this blog. I must give thought to what feels comfortable AND what’s necessary. For example, luxuriating over morning coffee is a must. (2) I received bloodwork results today and my vitamin D count is so low my cardiologist’s nurse practitioner asked me if I often fainted. Note to self, get sunlight. (3) Part of my morning ritual must include walking. My surgeon said I must walk as many miles as I can daily. I have been skipping days. (4) I tend not to eat before 1pm. I need breakfast. It can be simple. Yogurt, berries, homemade granola. Or two boiled eggs with whole wheat toast. My body needs fuel. These things popped into my head immediately.

Thanks for making my little grey cells churn. There are many ways to make retirement fulfilling. None of them start without a pleasant morning.

  3. How wonderful! Good luck in the next chapter of your life. I’m looking at semi-retirement options just now – again, I’d like more time to focus on my writing; but I’d like to stay economically active for a while yet.
